Winterising Your HARDI Sprayer: Steps for Protection and Readiness
Properly winterising your HARDI sprayer is vital to keep it in excellent condition during the colder months and ensure it is fully operational next spring. Follow these detailed steps to clean, prepare, and safeguard your HARDI equipment.
Important Safety Notices:
Never enter the spray tank.
Do not use bleach with HARDI Tank Clean or any ammonia-based product. Bleach must never be used to clean a sprayer.
Always wear protective clothing when handling chemicals or working with chemical equipment.
Cleaning Your Sprayer at the End of the Season
Open and remove all drain plugs, then thoroughly wash your HARDI sprayer tank inside and out, scrubbing as needed.
Remove all filters, nozzles, nozzle screens, and pipe end caps. Soak these components in 4 gallons of water mixed with ½ quart of HARDI Tank Clean. Scrub away any build-up using a soft brush.
Close the drains and refill the tank with clean water. Flush the system by running clean water through the boom and all accessories.
Fill the HARDI sprayer tank with 100 gallons of clean water and add 2 quarts of HARDI Tank Clean.
Start the pump, circulate the solution throughout the system, and let it soak overnight.
After 24 hours, empty the tank, refill with fresh water, and rinse the entire system.
Reinstall all screens and nozzles, ensuring to lubricate all O-rings with vegetable oil.
Winterising the Main System
Add 4-5 gallons of automotive antifreeze to the empty sprayer tank. Check the antifreeze mixture strength and adjust as needed.
Turn off all boom sections, but keep the master spray switch on. Start the pump to circulate the antifreeze mixture through the HARDI system. Avoid running the mixture through the boom, as this will release antifreeze onto the ground.
Drain all auxiliary tanks and lines, including the flush tank, freshwater tank, and foam marker tank.
Use compressed air to clear foam marker solution lines of any residue. Open and drain foam marker mixing chambers, and ensure the foam marker compressor and its internal components are completely dry.
Winterising the Spray Boom
Disconnect the boom feed hoses from the boom section valves.
Use compressed air to flush each boom section via the feed hoses until the system is dry.
Remove the nozzle tube end plugs and blow out any remaining water from the boom.
Empty all boom section filters and ensure the boom is completely free of water. Reassemble the components, lubricating all O-rings with vegetable oil.
Remove all gauges and store them indoors in an upright position to prevent damage from freezing temperatures.
Final Maintenance Tips
Take this opportunity to inspect your HARDI sprayer for any damage or wear. Apply touch-up paint where necessary to protect against rust and corrosion. Regular maintenance during winter storage will keep your HARDI equipment in optimal condition for the next spraying season.
By properly cleaning and winterising your HARDI sprayer, you’ll extend its life and ensure it’s ready to perform reliably when spring arrives.
